Buying a New Computer - What to Look For

When purchasing a new computer there are so many things that run through one's mind. A new computer is a large investment and there are so many different computers on the market now that it all comes down to what you really need. Answering a few simple questions before you begin your search for a new computer can dramatically reduce the headache of buying a new computer.

What will you be using the computer for? This is the most important question you will need to answer before you buy your new computer, because knowing what you will be using it for will give you the approximate price range that you are looking at. If you are going to be playing a lot of games, using graphical design software, and running multiple applications at once, then you will want to make sure your computer has the RAM (Random Access Memory) to support this type of use. At least 2 GB of RAM is recommended if you do not know exactly what kind of use you plan on getting out of the computer. Additionally, the hard drive is a good thing to look at in terms of size. Typically, computers now come with between 250 GB and 1 TB of hard drive space, without any additional costs. Sometimes a larger hard drive will cost a little bit more, but the price difference is worth it if you have a lot of photos or files that you need to store in your computer.

The next question you want to ask yourself is: How large of a screen do you want/need? If you are doing a lot of work on the computer all the time, then you will want a larger screen, probably 15" if you're using a laptop and between 21" and 24" if you're using a desktop. The screen size really comes down to personally preference and can make the user experience of the computer much more pleasant if you feel at home with the screen size. Some companies, such as Apple Inc., allow you to purchase a high definition upgrade to the screen that gives you more pixels for a better picture. Again, this all comes down to what you really want.

Finally, ask yourself if you're into brand names or not. Brand names can sell it for some people. Personally, I know that Apple computers and Toshiba computers are pretty similar in function, and sometimes you get more from Toshiba for a thousand dollars than you do from Apple, but I will buy and Apple computer over any other brand any day of the week. This comes down to what you think is worth the money and what you actually like (looks, feel, function, price, etc...). Just be sure you really like what you're purchasing, so you don't regret anything a couple months down the road.
